North Ivar is a street in Hollywood below the great sign of dreams, above the boulevard of cement stars and parallel to Vine Street, spine of Lotus Land. I lived in an old mansion in Hollywood that once belonged to Douglas Fairbanks Jr. It was perched at the top of the hill of North Ivar Avenue - the sprawl of L.A. below it. The Capitol Records building, a beacon for dreams, beside it. Opposite the Alto Nido of "Sunset Boulevard" fame, the old mansion housed outcast artists and forgotten eccentrics. And the street belonged to the lost and the disillusioned. Yet here I found music, film-making, photography and writing - nurtured by free thinkers and real creatives. We'd meet at Joseph's Cafe, when it was still a diner from another time, another place. It was here, that North Ivar Communications was born. |
